Learn about St. Petersburg Homeowners Flood Insurance

Congress created the National Flood Insurance Program in 1968 and requires owners of mortgaged property tin Special Flood Areas to carry flood insurance. FEMA produces Flood Insurance Rate Maps to determine these Special Flood Hazard Areas. A floodplain is the part of the land where water collects, pools, and flows during the course of natural events. Such areas are classified as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA), and are located in a 100-year flood zone.

Base Flood Elevation is the computed elevation to which floodwater is anticipated to rise during the base flood. Base Flood Elevations (BFEs) are shown on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and on the flood profiles. The BFE is the regulatory requirement for the elevation or flood proofing of structures. The relationship between the BFE and a structure's elevation determines the flood insurance premium.

St. Petersburg FL Flood Insurance Map:

Not only is flooding one of the most common and costly disasters, flood risk can also change over time because of new building and development, weather patterns and other factors. The city of St. Petersburg (Pinellas County) provides Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) determinations to let you know if you are in a flood hazard area and if you are required by federal law to carry flood insurance. The St. Petersburg (Pinellas County) High Risk Flood Zone interactive map allows all interested parties to search for County parcels by address and determine if the parcel is intersected by a FEMA-designated High Risk Flood Zone and the local Community Flood Hazard Area.
