This holiday season brings all sorts of activities. From lighting candles to hanging string lights. Here are some ways to keep your home and family safe from hazards such as fire and injury.
Lights: Inspect holiday string lights each year before hanging them up to ensure there are no frayed cords or cracked bulbs. When replacing bulbs, always unplug the lights first and make sure the voltage and wattage match the original bulb. When going to bed or leaving the house, be sure to turn off the lights.
Ornaments: Avoid glass ornaments, especially if you have curious children and pets. Using plastic ornaments makes tree decorating safe for the entire family. For pets, avoid hanging ornaments at the very bottom of the tree. To avoid injury altogether, gate off the area where the tree will stand so children and pets cannot get too close without supervision.
Candles: Always remember to blow out candles before going to bed and never leave them near curtains or flammable items. If you plan on leaving home or going to bed, set a reminder to blow out the candles at a certain time.
Extension cords: Avoid connecting more than one extension cord together. As tempting as it may be, it is also very dangerous. Purchase appropriate lengths in order to successful decorate your entire home. If the outlet is across the room, be sure to tack the extension cords against the walls so no one trips and falls.
Cooking: When entertaining guests, remember to keep an eye on the kitchen and never allow children to play near the area. Always have someone in the kitchen while food is on the stove or in the oven to avoid a fire.
Fire alarms: Test your smoke alarms on a regular basis to make sure they work. Be sure to install a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home as well, especially near bedrooms.
This is the season of good cheer and festive gatherings. Keep it safe by avoiding common dangers while setting a jolly holiday tone. Happy holidays!
