Electronic pickpocketing, also known as pocket surfing, has become more popular over the years, and many are unaware it could happen to them. Criminals are getting smarter, and more high-tech. Thieves use a device resembling an iPad, with the technology to pick up debit and credit card numbers, and wave it across a pocket or purse without a victim even realizing. If you have newer type of credit card with a computer chip, you are at a much larger risk of this happening to you.

Luckily, there are ways to prevent electronic pickpocketing happening to you. Just having the basic understanding about this new form of theft is step one. We also suggest:

  • When you are out in public, always stay alert to those around you.
  • Invest in a wallet or purse equipped with the technology to block thieves from scanning your cards.
  • Place tin foil around your card to mix-up the signals from the scanner.
  • Keep an eye on your bank statements for suspicious activity. If suspicious activity is present on your statement, notify your bank immediately before more damage can be done.
