October 7-13, 2018 is National Fire Prevention Week. Founded by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Prevention Week serves to remind us of the importance of fire prevention education.  According to the NFPA, an average of 358,500 home structure fires were responded to by U.S. fire departments between 2011- 2015. These fires caused $6.7 billion in damages and resulted in 12,300 injuries and 2,510 deaths.

The theme of this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “LOOK. LISTEN. LEARN. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere. ™” This campaign aims to educate on the three essential steps to take to prevent fires, and how to safely escape in the event of a fire.

“LOOK”: Identify the places a fire could start around your home.

“LISTEN”: Ensure you are able to hear a smoke alarm ringing from all areas of your home, as you may only have minutes to escape once your fire alarm goes off.

LEARN”: Know your emergency escape plan and make sure you have two ways out of every room in your home.
