As the scent of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie permeate through your home this Thanksgiving Day, we would like to remind you about some useful cooking safety advice.
According to the American Red Cross, more than 4,000 cooking related accidents occur each year, and more than half of those incidents are fire related. This is why it is important to always keep cooking ranges free of clutter. Trying to cook all of your dishes at once could result in accidental spills and grease fires. If in the event a grease fire occurs, NEVER use water to extinguish the flames. Doing this only spreads the flames. Instead, put an oven mitt on and smother the flames by carefully sliding a lid onto the pan and leave the lid in place until the pot or pan is cooled.
It is also important to properly thaw your turkey. The UDSA recommends thawing it in the refrigerator in its original wrapping, in a tray or pan to catch any juice that might leak. Although it is not recommended, if you decide to use a turkey fryer, always remember to use it outdoors, distant from buildings and any other flammable materials, do not overfill the fryer and never leave it unattended.
